I don't have the type of background you'd expect in a business consultant. Besides holding an undergraduate degree in biology and a graduate degree in microbiology, I spent about eight years in laboratories researching cancer.
While working in the lab, I met sales representatives who struggled to explain what their product could do and how it could benefit patients. That got me thinking: Perhaps there was a demand for people who could bridge the gap between science and business. After contributing to the development of an anti-cancer vaccine, I decided the time was right to change my career focus. I eventually enrolled in the MBA program at American University.
Drawn to Helping People I first came across Toffler Associates at a career fair sponsored by American. I wasn't even looking for a job at the time, but I was very impressed by Toffler's people — they were so classy, smart and professional. Very impressive. When I got an offer, I immediately accepted.
I'm naturally drawn to careers where I can help people. In science, I was trying to save lives. At Toffler Associates, I'm trying to help people come up with solutions that will make their organization more successful. And depending on the client, I may even be helping to save lives.
Since coming to Toffler Associates, I've worked on a number of projects that offer real-world experience. I really enjoy learning in the field rather than spending months in classroom-based training. Of course, the institutional knowledge among my colleagues here is outstanding. So even if you're new to an industry, you get the personal guidance you need for success.
Doing Important Work My favorite project to date involved collaborating with a military client to implement a strategic plan created by Toffler Associates. I was struck by the passion of the people on the client side who were responsible for the implementation. They were so enthused about the process and were willing to do whatever was necessary to make it happen, including working nights and weekends. Seeing this level of commitment showed me the importance of our work, which made me really proud.
I plan on being with Toffler Associates for the long haul. This is a growing firm where I'll be enjoying the kinds of opportunities I wouldn't get elsewhere. It's very exciting to be a part of this and to be teaming up with my colleagues on efforts that will help create a bright future for our clients and the firm.
